The Arnesen lab is pleased to keep the collaboration with Prof. Jaakko Saraste who recently transitioned to Emeritus at UiB.

The Saraste group has made important contributions to our understanding of the functional organisation of the intermediate compartment (IC), a membrane system operating in the early secretory pathway between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi complex.

Image (left) from Saraste’s latest publication, reporting that coronaviruses (CoVs) that assemble at the Rab1-positive IC exploit the endocytic recycling apparatus defined by Rab11 for their cellular release. This work challenges the traditional view that CoV exit from their host cells occurs via the constitutive secretory route.
